"Injury Prevention & Ergonomics for Computer Users"

Don't let computer use be a pain.
This morning on the radio I heard a commercial for
an airline that flies to Japan. Along with their
pitch of great fares and friendly service they also
throw in that you can get comfortable in their
"ergonomic sleeper seats."
What does that mean?
Ergonomics has to do with computers, right?
Actually, ergonomics is the study of human interaction
with machines. In the case of the airline seat,
it would mean a comfortable chair for sleeping or
even working while on the plane.
Throughout this decade, ergonomics has become a
buzz word in industrial settings, particularly in
reference to computer use. Ergonomic design makes
the use of a machine or utensil easier on the
human body. We have ergonomic versions of anything
from keyboards to screwdrivers to spoons. Ergonomic
products make human-machine interaction less strenuous
and make life easier on the user.
The U.S. Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics
(BLS) predicts that half of the American work force will
have experienced a repetitive stress injury on the job by
the end of this year. In addition, the BLS says that by
that time 100 million personal computers will be in use
in this country. These two factors equal an exorbitant
number of Computer Induced Repetitive Stress Injuries
(CIRSI's - pronounced sir-sees).
So what's so tough about using a computer?
The nature of computer work involves sitting in
a sustained posture for a prolonged period of time
while moving the arms, wrists, and hands in order to
manipulate the keyboard and mouse. This sounds easy
enough, however, the problem stems from what would
seem to be the easy part. Sustaining a static posture
is a strenuous activity. Postural muscles need to work
for prolonged periods of time, suffocating blood flow
to distal regions.
For example, carpal tunnel syndrome of the wrist is
triggered by the following chain reaction.
a.. Sitting upright while supporting the arms in a
functional position requires the muscles of the lower
back, neck and shoulders to constantly work.
b.. Eventually, fatigue of these muscles causes them
to tighten in order to maintain their control.
c.. Tight muscles decrease blood flow to the arms and hands.
d.. The decreased flow of blood prevents proper
nourishment to overworked wrist and hand muscles.
e.. Without good circulation, toxins that accumulate
from muscle activity are not flushed from the areas of
the computer users' body that require it most.
f.. The combination of poor muscle nutrition and toxin
accumulation in the carpal tunnel region causes inflammation
and pinching of tendons and other soft tissues.
This is painful! It becomes more painful if the median nerve,
which runs through the carpal tunnel, is one of those inflamed
soft tissues. This is carpal tunnel syndrome. Pain, tingling,
numbness, and the inability to grip all result from
maintaining prolonged static posture.
Physical therapists regularly encounter patients with
carpal tunnel syndrome and other CIRSI's. Most people
wait to the point where their pain is unbearable and they
can't work or perform many normal daily activities. At
this point many of these injuries are irreversible without
surgery, and even that is not guaranteed. This can be a
long, painful, expensive process.
What's the devoted web surfer to do?
The answer is threefold.
First, it is vital to properly arrange your workstation.
This is essentially what ergonomics is all about.
The best ergonomic equipment is a waste if not
used properly. If you are buying new products for
your workstation, think adjustable. Everyone is different,
so the key is to fit your workstation to your size and
functional needs.
Second, get comfortable directly in front of your computer
and use proper body mechanics. This means avoid slouching,
craning your head forward, and allowing your shoulders to
round forward. These are all positions that prohibit blood
flow and work against your body's ability to support itself.
Change positions every few minutes to relieve fatigued

Third, take rest breaks and perform simple stretching
and strengthening exercises that ease the activities
involved in computer work. Although it may be subtle,
computer use is a physical activity that can slowly wear
down muscles, tendons and other structures.
Train yourself for the physical rigors of computer use.
The following are several exercises that computer users
can do to prevent and treat Computer Induced Repetitive
Stress Injuries.
Sky Watcher
Position: Standing
1.. Place your feet shoulders' width apart.
2.. Place each of your hands on your buttocks, as if you
were putting them in your back pockets.
3.. Slowly lean backward until you feel a slight pull
in your back.
4.. Keep your chin tucked into your chest and look up
at the sky (or ceiling).
5.. If this is a pain-free movement for you, you should
perform this exercise every time you stand up from
your computer.
Repetitions: 10 times
Purpose:
a.. Increases blood flow into the lower back muscles.
b.. Reverses the stresses of sitting with a forward
flexed posture.
c.. Stretches the flexor muscles of the lower back.
d.. Prevents lower back pain.
Egyptian
Position: Sitting or Standing
1.. Look straight ahead, not up or down.
2.. Press your chin with your index finger.
3.. Glide your head back on your neck making
a "double chin."
Hold position for: 5 seconds
Repetitions: 10 times
Purpose:
a.. Strengthens the postural muscles in the back
of the neck.
b.. Stretches muscles around the neck.
c.. Prevents neck, arm, wrist, and hand injuries
caused by poor posture.
Speak to the Hand
Position: Sitting or Standing
1.. Straighten left hand out in front of you,
at shoulder height, as if pointing at something.
2.. Bend your left wrist back so that your fingers
point towards the ceiling.
3.. With your right hand, gently pull back on your
left hand fingers, bending your wrist back a little further.
Hold position for: 10 seconds
Repetitions: 5 times
1.. Repeat with your right wrist, assisting with your left hand.
Purpose:
a.. Stretches the wrist flexors and finger flexors
(muscles attaching to tendons that run through the
carpal tunnel and insert into the palm of the hand).
b.. Increases circulation throughout the wrists and hands.
c.. Helps to prevent carpal tunnel syndrome.

The AIDA Formula

Originally published in Sept. 1997, The A.I.D.A formula
has been used successfully by many online marketers. It
is revised and re-published here for your enjoyment.
I recently came across the AIDA formula. It is a fantastic
little tool for helping you write those killer classified ads
and sales letters we all need so badly.
Did you know that you can make your ads pull a 100%
greater response just by changing your headline? Well
that is why AIDA is so important.
Run the AIDA formula against all your sales literature
and you will soon be creating winning ad copy.
A = Attention: Make sure your headline catches your
readers' attention. It must excite them just by seeing
it. Make sure your headline either reveals or conceals
a common interest.
Consider a concern that a large percentage of your
target market has and use that as the theme of your
headline.
Here are a few you can use:
1) TO PEOPLE WHO WANT TO QUIT WORK SOMEDAY
2) HOW TO BURN OFF BODY FAT, HOUR-BY-HOUR
3) THE MOST EXPENSIVE MISTAKE OF YOUR LIFE
These headlines catch attention. Think of some that will
catch the attention of your target audience.
I = Interest: Interest is created by giving your potential
customer multiple benefits that will enhance their life.
Remember, customers buy on benefits not on features.
D = Desire: You can build desire by making your offer
irresistible.
Include heaps of free bonuses (they can keep even if they
return your product) Include an iron clad, no risk guarantee.
Also it is important to build urgency into every offer. For
example: "Order now in the next 72 hours and you will get
this free bonus."
A = Action: Last but most important, your sales piece must
have a call to action. You must ask your customer to buy.
If you have captured their attention, over-whelmed them
with benefits and created an undeniable desire through
free bonuses and the best guarantee, you must ask them
to buy. You also must make it so easy for them to buy (as
many payment methods as possible) that they will feel left
out or disappointed if they don't.
Short and sweet. Run the AIDA formula against every piece
of sales literature you are currently using and against every
piece you create. It takes time in the beginning but as this
concept becomes ingrained, you will find yourself writing
better and better ad copy.
