How To Create An Ezine Directory


Ezinelocater.com a brand new site, was officially launched on 14 February 2001. I listed my ezine with this site on February 17, 2001 and Jeff gave me such great service I just had to meet the man behind http://www.ezinelocater.com

I did an ad hoc interview with the owner, Jeff Wilson. Here is an overview that interview:


Listen, Jeff, I'd like you to tell my readers how you came up with the idea for your site?

Jeff:
Having been online since 1995 and subscribing to over 100 Internet Marketing ezines I kept reading how targeted ezine advertising provided the best bang for your internet advertising dollars.

Several months ago I was searching for ezines to advertise one of my affiliate programs. After searching through more than 50 directories I still found it very difficult and time consuming to find the exact information I was looking for.

Larry:
In essence you were getting frustrated . . .Then what happened?

Jeff:
Well, that's when the light bulb came on. I figured, Why not build my own directory and build it so it is a win win situation for everyone. Now, this meant I had to wear at least three different hats:

Larry:
I don't quite understand -- What's behind this "3 hats" bit?

Jeff:
Let me explain. I put myself in differing situations. First I was a Free Information Seeker (Hat 1), Secondly I thought of myself as an advertiser (Hat 2) and finally I visualized being an ePublisher (Hat 3).

Larry:
I see . . . But wasn't that a bit difficult?

Jeff:
Not really, let me illustrate:

A. My First Hat: - Free Information Seeker/Subscriber

  1. Navigation had to be easy and fast from anywhere in the world.
  2. I would want to know immediately if the site is updated regularly.
  3. Free access to information (no membership fees).
  4. It must be easy to find ezines on my favorite topics.
  5. It's got to be easy to subscribe to selected ezines.
  6. It must be easy to UNsubscribe from selected ezines.
  7. I want to see as many details as possible about the ezine in a quick & easy-to-read format before I subscribe.

B. My Second Hat: - The Advertiser

  1. I must be able to quickly find specific types of ezine advertising. I want to know how many subscribers and how often published at a glance.
  2. I want to see the ad prices of specific types of ads at a glance.
  3. I want to have free access to complete advertising details.
  4. I want to be able to select a targeted topic and a specific type of advertising and see the results immediately (Coming soon).

B. My Third Hat: - The ePublisher

  1. I want an inexpensive way to advertise my ezine.
  2. I want to continuously grow my list with people who want the type of content I am offering.
  3. I want to increase the chances of selling all my ads each issue.

Larry:
It certainly looks like you put a tremendous amount of work into your site. Could you provide my readers with some benefits of listing their ezine(s) with your site?

Jeff:
I like to think Ezinelocater.com provides a solution for everyone no matter which hat you're wearing.

As an ezine publisher you know the gold is in your list. In order to build your list you must advertise. You must take advantage of every opportunity available. I am certainly bias but I believe the most targeted advertising available to an Ezine Publisher is an Ezine Directory.

Having said that I offer two options at EzineLocater.com:

1. FREE LISTINGS

I almost hate to mention these here because of the time it takes to build these attractive listings. If you're an epublisher it only takes you 5 minutes to fill out a form and me 30-40 minutes to build your page, update the necessary specialty lists, and then upload the new pages. (Yes, currently it's all done manually, but I am working on automating the process)

2. PREMIUM LISTINGS

Premium Listings are for epublishers who are serious about making money online. Your ezine listing can be linked to an unlimited number of Specialty Lists, increasing your link popularity at the same time substantially increasing potential exposure to your ezine.

If you sell ads in your ezine a premium listing is almost a necessity. The first place advertisers will look for specific types of ads is one of the Specialty lists.

Larry:
Jeff, I'm always up front with my subscribers. Are there any negatives with your site?

Jeff:
Ezinelocater.com is a brand new directory so you may not receive immediate results. But, having just retired from the Canadian Armed Forces ezinelocater.com is now my bread and butter and I am committed to making it the best Ezine Directory online!

Larry:
I know you're always adding publishers at the site but are there any new *real* "Happenings" coming up?

Jeff:
There are many new enhancements in the works for publishers with premium listings which will help you signup more subscribers and sell more ads.

Publishers, hang on to your hats you ain't seen nothin' yet! Not only will you soon be able to update your own listing at your convenience, receive realtime notification of when and how many subscribers have subscribed to your ezine, but you will also be able to add your current issue to your premium ezine listing effortlessly!

Of course all this will take time and will be completed in phases over the next few months!

Larry:
